A jigsaw is the one puzzle every market understands. It needs no instructions, it survives being done and undone a hundred times, and it sits at every price point from a pocket-money board to a boxed adult gift. This range covers the whole span: 12-piece first puzzles with chunky pieces, 24 and 48-piece cartoon boards, shaped and irregular cuts, and adult jigsaws up to 1,000 pieces.
The commercial case is simple. A jigsaw is cheap to cut, light to ship and easy to merchandise by age and by picture. Retailers buy them in depth because they sell in depth: a shop that stocks one jigsaw stocks twelve. The pieces that do the work are the 24 to 100 piece band, where the picture still reads at arm's length and a child can finish it alone.
