Private label wooden puzzles: what you can change, what needs tooling, and what it costs
Private label wooden puzzles explained: which changes need no tooling, which need a die, MOQ by change, timelines and the artwork you need to supply.
Private label covers a wide range. At one end it means your logo on a stock design that already exists. At the other it means a puzzle that did not exist before, built to your drawing, in your box, with your instructions inside.
Most first programmes sit at the near end, and that is usually the right place to start, so this guide separates the changes that need no tooling from the ones that do and sets out what we need from you at each stage.
Two ends of the same scale
A stock design with your branding is still private label. The product is ours, the identity is yours, and the compliance report is already in place for the model you are buying. The advantage is speed and a low threshold; the limitation is that another buyer can order the same puzzle in a different box.
A fully custom puzzle is the other end. New cut, new artwork, new packaging, new tests. It takes longer and costs more before the first unit exists, and it gives you something no competitor can list.
Between the two there is a wide middle: our cut, your artwork, your box, your instructions. That middle is where most of our private label orders sit, because it delivers differentiation without tooling.
Changes that need no tooling
These can be applied to an existing design without a new die or a new production setup:
- Logo on the box. Printed directly, or applied as a label at low volume.
- Box artwork. A new design on a stock box size, including product photography and copy.
- Barcode and importer text. Your EAN or UPC, your company name and address, your warning text in your language.
- Instruction or activity card. A printed insert added to the box.
- Paint colour within our existing palette. Changing a colour to another colour we already run.
- Piece bagging and packing configuration. Individually bagged, or loose in the box.
- Retail-ready labels. Price stickers, hang tags, security tags applied at packing.
None of these changes the puzzle. They change how it is presented, which is often where the margin sits, because a well-designed box sells a simple product.
Changes that need tooling
These change the object, and each one carries a cost before the first unit:
- A new cut pattern. A new die for die cutting, or a new laser path for laser cutting. Laser avoids the die cost but still needs programming and a sample.
- A new size or thickness. Affects board supply, cutting, and usually the box as well.
- New moulded or turned parts. Custom knobs, pegs or handles need a tool or a machining setup.
- A custom box. A non-standard box size needs a cutting die for the carton board.
- A custom insert. Foam, moulded pulp or folded board inserts are tooled to the product.
The rule of thumb is simple: if it changes a dimension, it probably needs tooling. If it only changes what is printed, it probably does not.
MOQ and timeline by change
| Change | Indicative MOQ | What it affects | Effect on lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcode, importer text, label | 10 to 16 | Packing only | None |
| Logo or artwork on a stock box | 100 | Print setup | Artwork approval before production |
| Custom box, stock size | 100 to 300 | Print and packing | Adds a pre-production artwork round |
| Custom paint colour | 100 to 300 | Paint batch | Colour matching and a new sample |
| Printed instruction card | 100 to 300 | Content approval | |
| New cut, laser | Quoted per design | Programming and sampling | Sample first, then normal production |
| New cut, die | Quoted per design | Die making | Die lead time before production |
| New size or custom box | Quoted per design | Board, cutting, packaging | Longest of the options above |
Timelines assume artwork is approved. In practice, artwork is the step that slips, not production: a print file that arrives in the wrong format or changes after approval can add more time than any factory process.
Artwork you need to supply
For the box and any printed insert:
- Vector files, AI or PDF, with fonts outlined. Raster images at print resolution, not lifted from a website.
- CMYK artwork with any spot colours named, and a colour reference for brand colours.
- The dieline we send you, used unmodified. Do not scale it.
- Barcode as a vector or as a number we can generate, plus the correct symbology for your market.
- Importer name, address and any statutory text for the destination country, supplied as final copy rather than as a placeholder.
- Warning text and age grading, agreed before the file is signed off.
For a new puzzle design, we also need the image at the correct aspect ratio for the finished size, and a note of any area that must not be cut through, such as a face or a key detail.
We send a digital proof before print. Once that proof is approved, changes are chargeable, so it is worth having two people read it.
Sourcing this product from us
Whatever the level of customisation, the compliance position follows the model. If the puzzle itself is unchanged, the existing report for that model applies; if the cut, board or a paint colour changes, the documentation needs review, and we raise that at quotation stage rather than after the order.
We supply private label across all eight categories, from a logo on a stock box to a new cut with custom packaging. Minimum order is from 10 pieces per SKU, with a typical MOQ of 16 for stock designs and 100 to 300 pieces where a custom colour or box is involved. Samples take 3 to 7 working days; production runs about 15 to 35 days after sample approval. We ship FOB Ningbo or Shanghai, with EXW and CIF on request, and provide EN71, ASTM F963 and CPSIA reports per model with the quotation, plus CE marking where applicable.
Send us the design reference, the changes you want and your target quantity, and we will confirm which of them need tooling and what the MOQ becomes. Write to bf@ycyy.cn or message WhatsApp on +86 159 8884 2458.
