Jigsaw puzzle size chart: piece count, finished size and carton implications

A wooden jigsaw size chart mapping piece count to typical finished dimensions in cm and inches, with the carton and freight implications of each size.

Piece count tells you how long a puzzle takes. Finished size tells you whether it fits the shelf, the table and the carton. Buyers who plan by piece count alone often find that the box will not stack, or that the finished puzzle is too large for the customer's dining table.

The chart below gives the sizes we see most often; treat them as typical ranges rather than exact specifications, because final size is confirmed per SKU and board size, border allowance and cut style all move the number.

Why finished size drives the decision

Three things depend on it. The box dimensions follow the folded puzzle size, and the box is what the retailer sees on shelf. The carton quantity follows the box, which sets freight per unit. And the customer experience follows the finished size, because an adult puzzle that will not fit a standard table is a return waiting to happen.

For children's puzzles, the finished size also has to suit the child. A puzzle that is physically too large to reach across is not a harder puzzle, just an awkward one.

The size chart

Dimensions are the assembled puzzle, not the box. Inches are rounded from centimetres, so they will not convert exactly.

Piece countTypical finished size (cm)Typical finished size (in)Carton implications
9 to 12, tray30 x 2211.8 x 8.7Shallow tray box, high units per carton, light
2430 x 22 to 40 x 3011.8 x 8.7 to 15.7 x 11.8Standard small box, stacks well
35 to 4840 x 3015.7 x 11.8Standard box, good carton density
60 to 10040 x 30 to 50 x 3515.7 x 11.8 to 19.7 x 13.8Longer box, carton quantity drops
150 to 20050 x 3519.7 x 13.8Box length starts to limit carton count
50052 x 3820.5 x 15.0Adult format, sturdy box needed for stacking
100068 x 4826.8 x 18.9Large flat box, carton weight rises sharply
200098 x 6938.6 x 27.2Very large box, freight planned per pallet

The jump that catches buyers out is between 500 and 1000 pieces. Carton count falls and carton weight rises at the same time, so freight per unit can move by more than the piece count suggests. Model that step before you commit a container.

What moves the size within a piece count

Piece count does not fix size, because piece size is a separate decision. Two 100-piece puzzles can differ by ten centimetres on the long edge.

The variables are piece size (which the design team sets, usually to suit the age band), border allowance for the frame or tray, and cut style. A puzzle with irregular or animal-shaped pieces needs slightly more border, so the same piece count comes out marginally larger.

Where a buyer specifies a size rather than a piece count, we work backwards: fix the finished size, then set piece size and count to fit. That is common for retail planograms with fixed shelf depth.

Wood also moves with humidity, so a finished size is a nominal figure. Cutting, sanding and printing each carry a small tolerance, and a puzzle that has travelled in a dry container may measure fractionally differently from one measured in the factory. We confirm nominal size per SKU on the specification sheet and size the box with enough clearance that normal variation does not cause a tight fit. If you are designing packaging or fixtures around a precise dimension, tell us at quotation stage rather than after sampling.

Carton and freight implications

Carton data is not an afterthought; it is half the landed cost. Three points are worth building into a range plan.

Shallow boxes carton well. A tray puzzle at 30 x 22 cm packs many units per carton, and the carton stays light. That is why entry-price puzzles can be sold at low unit cost even with modest volumes.

Long boxes cost more to ship than their weight suggests. From 50 cm upward, the box shape wastes container space, and the number of units per carton falls. A 100-piece puzzle at 50 x 35 cm is not much heavier than a 48-piece at 40 x 30 cm, but it occupies noticeably more.

Weight limits bind before volume does at the top end. A carton of 1000-piece puzzles can approach handling limits, so we plan pallet patterns rather than carton counts alone. Ask for carton dimensions, gross weight and units per carton for every SKU you are considering, and check them against your warehouse racking.

Using the chart in a range plan

A practical range covers three finished sizes rather than many: a small tray size for the youngest band, a mid size around 40 x 30 cm for the core children's line, and one adult size. That keeps box tooling and carton planning simple and lets the retailer merchandise a consistent block.

If you are selling online, size matters differently again. The box is a photographed object and a shipping unit, so a compact box with a strong front panel usually outperforms a large flat box on both counts.

If you are selling through distributors, the carton is the product. Distributors buy pallets, and a SKU that does not stack cleanly will be dropped regardless of how good the puzzle is.

Sourcing this product from us

Our adult line runs 500, 1000 and 2000 pieces, with irregular animal-shaped cuts available on request; children's jigsaw runs from 2 pieces upward. Minimum order is from 10 pieces per SKU, typically 16, and custom colour or box starts at 100 to 300 pieces.

Samples take 3 to 7 working days, production about 15 to 35 days after approval. We ship FOB Ningbo or Shanghai, with EXW and CIF on request, and supply EN71, ASTM F963 and CPSIA reports per model with the quotation, plus CE marking where applicable.

Send us your shelf depth and target box size and we will confirm finished dimensions, carton data and indicative FOB pricing. Write to bf@ycyy.cn or message WhatsApp on +86 159 8884 2458.
